By Dr Melody Smith, Clinical Psychologist
Today marks a significant moment in your journey toward becoming a clinical psychologist. It’s DClinPsy submission day. After weeks (often months) of drafting, reflecting, editing, doubting, reworking and courageously trying again, you have reached submission day. Whether you pressed the button this morning, yesterday, or sometime over the last few days, we want to say this clearly:
Well done. Truly.
Submitting the DClinPsy application is not just an administrative task. It is emotional, personal, stretching and, at times, confronting. It asks you to sit with your story, your learning, your values and the experiences that have shaped you. It asks you to articulate strengths while holding vulnerability. It asks you to find clarity while balancing work, study, family, health and life.
And you did that.
At ACPsych, we see you. We feel the weight and significance of this milestone because we’ve walked alongside so many of you this season—in writing retreats, coaching sessions, reflective workshops, last-minute panics and quiet moments of self-doubt. And now, as the deadline arrives, we want you to know that we are still here with you.
Submission day is a moment to pause. To breathe. To recognise the commitment and heart you’ve poured into this process. It’s also a moment that can feel strangely unsteady: one minute relief, the next exhaustion, then a flicker of “What now?”

The Truth About the Post-Submission Space
For many applicants, the hours and days after submission can feel disorientating. You’ve been working at full pace, only to suddenly stop. It’s common to feel suspended. Like your mind is still running even though the task is done.
You might notice a mix of pride and self-critique, or feel both light and heavy at once. This emotional jumble doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It simply means your application mattered to you.
This is also the moment where gentle reflection becomes important again. Not the pressured kind you’ve been doing for the form, but spacious, compassionate reflection that helps you steady yourself for the months ahead.
And that’s exactly why we created our upcoming reflective workshop.
About the Workshop (and Why It Might Be Exactly What You Need)
On Saturday 22nd November 2025, we’re hosting Managing Difficult DClinPsy Feelings, a reflective workshop facilitated by Hannah Lamplough, Trainee Clinical Psychologist.
We’re not promising miracles. This isn’t about predicting outcomes, fixing uncertainty, or offering false reassurance. It is simply a space, a thoughtful, supportive one, to help you:
- settle after the intensity of the application process
- make sense of whatever emotions are surfacing
- understand why this “in-between” period can feel so uncomfortable
- reconnect with your balance, values and perspective
- begin moving from “doing” to “being”
The session blends short teaching input with reflective prompts, peer discussion and gentle grounding techniques. It’s designed to be containing, steadying and honest. A place where you don’t have to perform, justify or compare. Just reflect, breathe and be alongside others who completely understand what today feels like.
You’ll also receive the Processing the Pause Workbook, which deepens this work. It guides you through sections like Arriving in the Pause, The Uncomfortable Middle and From Self-Critique to Self-Compassion, offering a way to continue reflecting long after the workshop ends.
More than anything, the workshop exists because we know what this stage can feel like. And we continue to be here for you because your wellbeing matters just as much as your ambition.
You Are Allowed to Pause
Before you step into the waiting months ahead, today is a good moment to recognise what you’ve done. You’ve written an application that reflects your journey, your growth and your care for the profession. You’ve stretched yourself. You’ve shown courage.
Whether or not you feel proud right now, allow the possibility that you deserve to.
If you’re feeling a mixture of things today, that’s okay. If you’re unsure what you feel, that’s okay too. However this moment is showing up for you, it’s valid!
And if you’d appreciate space to unpack some of that, or simply sit with others who are navigating the same pause, we would love to welcome you to the workshop. It’s there to support you, hold you gently, and remind you that you are more than the outcome you’re now waiting for.

A Final Note for Submission Day
However today is landing for you- light, heavy, confusing, energising, or somewhere in between- we want to recognise the commitment that brought you here. This milestone matters, and so does the effort behind it.
Take a moment to breathe. To slow down. To soften any instinct to review, re-check or analyse what’s already been submitted. You’ve done enough for today.
And if you’d value a reflective, steadying space to hold the coming weeks, we’d be very glad to welcome you to our November workshop. There’s support, community and gentle structure waiting for you when you’re ready.
You’ve taken an important step. Let this be your pause.
