Supporting Your Path to Becoming a Clinical Psychologist

Getting qualified as a clinical psychologist does not happen by accident! For most, pursuing a career as a clinical psychologist only begins by getting an undergraduate degree in psychology.

Understanding the Challenges of Pursuing a Career in Clinical Psychology

At Aspiring Clinical Psych (ACPsych), we know too well the sacrifices aspiring clinical psychologists make to progress their careers. Psychology graduates, on the road to becoming clinical psychologists, do countless hours of unpaid work, are committed to personal and professional development and go above and beyond to help others.
‍
But progressing from psychology graduate to the clinical psychology doctorate can be so, so stressful. Juggling multiple voluntary roles with paid work, postgraduate studies, application writing- and life- is tough! It’s no wonder some aspiring clinical psychologists feeling emotionally and physically drained, overwhelmed and unable to keep up with demands. Sometimes, pursuing a career in clinical psychology can seem like a “perfect recipe” for burnout.

Hi Melody, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all your guidence and support during my interview preparation. I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been offered a place on the Forensic Psychology Practice Doctorate at Birminghan, starting this September! 🙂 Although I’m still awaiting feedback from my Lancaster Clinical Psychology interview, I’m truly excited to be moving forward with a doctoral qualification in any case…

Good morning, I just wanted to say thank you to Dr Melody Smith for all the support and guidance you gave following my mock interview. It undoubtedly helped me secure a place on the DClinPsy at the University of Hertfordshire this year and for that I am so grateful! Thank you so much.

Being able to discuss openly in the workshops and have a more intimate talk about details of co-production was really useful.

"The structure! The information (definition, ladder of participation, interactive participation, reflection) helped to check understanding in a way that consolidated learning and helped grow my understanding without feeling like I would need to return multiple times to the recording. The session alone was helpful in my learning; I gained insights about past work and ideas of how to move my use of coproduction forward. Though, I likely will return to the recording because it was brilliant!

I’ve been avoiding the Rolf model (using kolb) and it was helpful to use one so valued in this sector!

When we were giving an opportunity to reflect on case where we used the person centred approach the explanation of the model was 5 star! The operationalisation of complex theories into simple diagrams (3 core TA competencies) and an analogy (self-actualisation - potato) made it practical to apply in future and easy to remember

Opportunity to ask questions, and gain more understanding has been awesome!

The facilitator allowed enough space to be able to contribute and the break out room encouraged thought provoking reflections.

I really enjoyed learning about the Recovery Model and how it's more personal and reflective of how life is journey, and how recovery isn't always a specific destination. I also liked how we discussed the practical side of things, like barriers to using this approach in the NHS and how to deal with challenges like culture, stigma etc.

The workshop provided me theories to put my experiences into more thoughtful and scientific words. The facilitator was encouraging and explained the theories well.

I really enjoyed the free-writing task and how the floor was open to discuss what reflection means to everyone.

I loved the role play as it made me reflect on how we can frame questions to explore clients’ systems.

I think the whole workshop was extremely thought-provoking (I watched back so did not take part live however used the reflective spaces provided) and it helped me to gain awareness of where I am advantaged/disadvantaged and differential power and how this applies to the workplace with CYP and families. Thanks again.

Understanding the theory but also the way Jamie explained things and gave reflection points was very thought-provoking and encouraged my own reflection for applications and job interviews on therapeutic alliance 🙂

The STARR example given for a clinical setting was really helpful. Also the tip for us to have cases that map onto different questions was good.

I am a non-native speaker and I also obtained my BSc degree in applied psychology in another country. Of course, I have a lot of fears in my head regarding my professional background and how I need to present it, how I need to structure all my clinical experience, what types of examples I need to provide, etc. I can say with confidence I got exactly the support I was looking for. Now I clearly understand how I need to present myself, what things in the application should I pay special attention to and how to improve my statement in the future application.

The route in clinical psychology might be difficult, especially if you are a new person in this system, so Melody's expertise and help were invaluable during my career opportunities search. All her help and support made me feel much more confident during this difficult process. I’m extremely fortunate to get acquainted with her! Again, thank you so much – I greatly appreciate what you’ve done for me! I’ll keep you posted on how my career search progresses.

The examples provided in the feedback are immensely helpful Melody has been so helpful with the review of my person statement; she helped me to think about how I am writing and modify this to make it sound more reflective and engaging. The 'critical friend' approach is exactly what I need! Thanks again. I could not upload the application form from Clearing house because the file was too big. So I just uploaded a word document with personal statement attached Feedback was amazing. I feel as though I should maybe have more faith in myself. My confidence has been boosted by the kind words I was given.

Dr Melody Smith provides helpful and detailed feedback (which to me shows her care in ensuring her clients be the best they can in the personal statement), whilst also commenting on the good parts of the statement to ensure we feel motivated to continue typing. Thank you for the thoughtful feedback.

I found my feedback informative and personal. I was left feeling confident about next steps. Highly recommend My review gave me the confidence I needed to apply as a neurodivergent student. Having extra feedback and areas to improve were extremely helpful.
