By Dr Melody Smith

Embarking on the journey to becoming a clinical psychologist can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to navigating the application process for the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy). With deadlines, documents, and decisions ahead, it’s important to stay organised and informed. Below, I’ve outlined the essential key dates for the 2024 DClinPsy application season (Leeds Clearing House, 2024)*, alongside some practical advice to keep you on track and confident throughout the process.

1. Start Early: Application Opens in September 2024 on Leeds Clearing House

The window to begin your DClinPsy application opens some time in September 2024. Starting early will help you complete your application gradually, give you time to reflect on and refine your answers and avoid last-minute stress. Starting your application online early can also highlight unforeseen challenges, such as delays in gathering documents or issues with references earlier, giving you time to act.

Tips: Visit https://www.clearing-house.org.uk/ and register if you haven’t already. This is where you will make your application. Set aside time to review the application requirements and begin gathering all the necessary materials, including academic documents and references as soon as possible. Double-check the specific requirements for each course you’re applying to, as they can vary.

2. Save Money by Applying Before 23rd October 2024

Submitting your application and paying the processing fee by 23 October 2024 can save you £15. If you’re ready with your documents and have your application prepared, applying early is not only a great way to ensure you’re ahead of the curve, but it’s also a way to save a bit of money.

Tip: Use this early deadline as a goal to have your entire application in its final stages. Even if you still need to upload some additional documents, you can submit. Of you decide not to submit, you’ll be well on your way to your finalised application.

3. Final Application Submission: 20 November 2024 (1:00 pm UK Time)

The final deadline to submit your DClinPsy application is 1:00 pm (UK time) on 20 November 2024. This is a firm deadline, so it’s crucial that you don’t leave anything until the last minute. Ensure all sections of your application are complete, including the payment of fees.

Tip: Submit your application a few days before the deadline to avoid any last-minute technical issues. It’s better to have everything in early than to risk missing out due to unforeseen problems.

4. Suitability Statements: Due by 4 December 2024

Your Suitability Statements are a key part of your application, providing the courses you apply to with a better understanding of your readiness and motivation for clinical training. These statements need to be submitted by your referees by 4th December 2024.

Tip: Be sure to periodically check your application overview page to ensure your suitability statements have been received and marked as complete. Consider following-up with your referees, if you feel this is needed.

5. Document Submission: Don’t Delay

If you don’t have all your required documents by the submission deadline, don’t panic! You can submit your application without them, but be sure to provide any missing documents as soon as possible. After submitting, you’ll need to:

  • Email your Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) documents and/or IELTS results (if required).
  • Upload any course-specific documents to your application portal.

Tip: The sooner you submit missing documents, the smoother your application process will likely feel. Keep an eye on your email and periodically check your application status for updates on your application status

6. Application Release: 31 January 2025

All submitted applications will be released to the respective courses by 31 January 2025. From here, the courses will be reviewing applications, which will lead to short-listing and invitations to selection tests or interviews.

Tip: Try to be kind and patient with yourself during this period. Focus on preparing for potential interviews or tests by researching each course’s specific interview process and selection criteria.

7. Shortlisting, Selection Tests and Interviews: December 2024 to May 2025

Courses will conduct shortlisting and selection tests from December 2024 to mid-March 2025. By 14 March 2025, all applicants will be informed whether they have been shortlisted for an NHS-funded place.

Interviews for NHS-funded places will take place between 17 March and 23 May 2025. By 30 May 2025, courses will send out results of interviews, including offers of places or reserve list positions.

Tip: Use the time leading up to interviews to practice your interview skills, familiarise yourself with common questions, such as those in our Resource Library and refine your understanding of key concepts in clinical psychology.

8. Responding to Offers: 6 June 2025

Once offers are made, applicants must respond by 2:00 pm (UK time) on 6 June 2025. Make sure to check your junk or spam folders, as emails from the Clearing House or courses may get redirected there.

Tip: If you’re placed on a reserve list, try to stay positive. We appreciate being place on a reserve list at either the Interview or Offer stage can be highly challenging. There’s always the possibility that places may open up. Also by being offered a reserve spot, they’re basically communicating that you’re a good candidate!

9. Courses Begin: September to Mid-October 2025

All DClinPsy courses begin between early September and mid-October 2025. This is the final step in your application journey, where you officially start your training as a clinical psychologist.

Tip: Use the summer to prepare yourself for the demands of the course, both academically and personally. Familiarise yourself with your chosen course and get ready for an exciting new chapter
